How To Replace the Pull Cord on a Troy Built Trimmer
The pull cord on a Troy Built trimmer winds up a spring-controlled pulley. When you pull the cord, it spins the pulley. Push the ignition switch into the "Off" position to prevent an accidental start while working on the pull cord. If your engine's still hot, let it sit for several minutes to cool.

Withdraw about 6 inches of cord from the pulley. Make a loop in the cord. Insert the loop, at the point the line crosses itself, into the notch on top of the pulley. Wiggle the pulley and cord back and forth while holding onto the cover to release tension from the recoil spring.

Release the tension of the recoil spring fully. Unwind the pull cord. Cut the knot in the cord and pull it off of the pulley. Cut the cord below the starter handle. Toss the cord in the garbage, but keep the starter handle.

Thread the new cord into the pulley's center hole. Continue threading the line through the pulley. Thread it through the starter cover and the hole in the starter handle.

Tie an overhand knot at the base of the pulley to attach the cord. Tie an overhand knot into the other end. Push the knot into the starter handle.

Roll the cord around the pulley. Leave about 6 inches off the pulley. Make a loop in the cord. Insert the loop into the pulley's notch. Jiggle the cord and pulley to reset the recoil spring.

Place the starter cover over the flywheel and mount the pulley onto the crankshaft. Pull out about 4 inches of line. Tighten all three screws. Release the pull cord.

Tips & Warnings
If the new pull cord doesn't retract, take the cover off and reset the tension on the recoil spring.
Always wear safety glasses when removing and installing the pull cord.
