How to Get Dog Urine Out of a Mattress

Urine stains leave behind an unpleasant, lingering odor and make your mattress appear unsightly. If your dog urinates on your mattress, clean it immediately to prevent the urine from seeping into the material. Get dog urine out of your mattress with items already in your home, instead of purchasing commercial cleaning products. After you remove the dog urine, dry the mattress properly to prevent mold and mildew from growing.

Things You'll Need

  • Paper towels
  • Baking soda
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Vinegar
  • Spray bottle
  • Portable fan
  • Blot the dog urine with paper towels to remove as much as possible from the mattress. Avoid rubbing, as doing so spreads the dog urine.

  • Apply baking soda over remaining dog urine, completely covering it. Baking soda absorbs moisture and odor. Let the baking soda sit for one hour, and then vacuum it off the mattress.

  • Combine two parts vinegar and one part water in a spray bottle. Spray the area where the dog urinated.

  • Move the mattress outdoors into the sunlight. Direct sunlight helps to disinfect and dry the mattress. If you are not able to move the mattress outdoors, dry it with a portable fan.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you still notice an unpleasant odor on your mattress, try a commercial enzyme cleaner designed to eliminate dog-urine odor.
  • Do not put bedding on the mattress until it dries completely, as doing so can cause mold or mildew to grow.
