How to Remove Gum From Inside of a Dryer

Remove chewing gum from the inside of a dryer with items around your home.

If you forgot to check pockets before doing the laundry, you may discover an unsightly surprise, like chewing gum, inside your dryer. The heat from the dryer will cause the chewing gum to stick to the dryer and your clothes. Once you notice the gum, you need to remove it to restore your dryer to its original condition. The chewing gum may appear difficult to remove, but you can get it off safely with items you have around your home.

Things You'll Need

• Old towels
• 1 tbsp. powdered laundry detergent
• Water
• Container
• Sponge
• Damp washcloths

Instructions

1. Remove all the clothing from the dryer. Fill the dryer with three to four old towels.

2. Turn the dryer on high to let it warm for five to 10 minutes. This will loosen the chewing gum.

3. Combine 1 tbsp. of powdered laundry detergent with a small amount of water in a container. You only need enough water to make a paste. Add the water slowly and stir until a paste forms.

4. Cover a sponge with the cleaning solution. Scrub the gum off the inside of the dryer with the sponge.

5. Scrub the inside of the dryer with the sponge. This will ensure that you remove any residue you may not be able to see. Make more of the cleaning mixture if you run out.

6. Remove the old towels from the dryer. Place three to four damp washcloths, and run the dryer for one cycle.

7. Place the washcloths in the washing machine. Inspect the dryer to ensure that all traces of the gum are removed. If you still notice the chewing gum, then repeat the process.

Tips & Warnings

• Avoid using steel wool or a harsh abrasive so that you do not scratch the dryer drum.
