How to Transfer an Automobile Title in Colorado

A vehicle title is a legal document certifying vehicle ownership. When you sell the vehicle, the title must be transferred. If you do not transfer the title of a vehicle when you sell it, you may be held liable for the vehicle in the event of an accident or legal issues. If you want to transfer a title in Colorado, there are several requirements you must meet before a title transfer is legal.

• Title

Instructions

1. Print out a bill of sale (see Resources). In Colorado, the law states you must have this document to complete a transfer.

2. Visit your local Title and Registration office with the buyer of the vehicle. There is an office in the Department of Motor Vehicles for each county in Colorado (see Resources).

3. Enter the vehicle's mileage---if the car is less than 10 years old---on the title along with the name and address of the buyer.

4. Sign and date the Colorado Bill of Sale document, which includes your name, the buyer's name, the amount the car was sold for, vehicle identification number, year, make and model of the vehicle.

5. Remove your Colorado license plate from the vehicle and give the buyer the title and bill of sale. After that, the transfer is complete.

Tips & Warnings

• Colorado does not have a set time limit for when you must title a vehicle following its purchase.
