Software to Convert Cassette Tapes Into CDs
With the proper software, a computer with a sound card and 1/8-inch male-male stereo audio cable, analog audio from cassettes can be converted to digital audio on a CD. To set up, insert one end of the cable into the headphone jack of the cassette player and the other into the microphone jack of the computer. Launch the appropriate software and press the record button.

You can burn audio from a cassette tape to CD with Golden Records Analog to CD or MP3 Converter. This software records audio from the cassette player, detects the silence between songs and divides the audio into separate tracks. You can enhance the audio to remove any popping or distortion. You also can use Audacity and Windows Media Player. Audacity will record all audio streaming in from the cassette player. It includes some enhancement tools to clean up the sound and remove distortion. But it will not separate tracks automatically or burn the audio to CD. You will have to press the stop button after each song has recorded then remove any excess audio with the built-in editing tool. The track can be saved on computer in a variety of formats such as MP3 or WMA. Use Windows Media Player to burn the CD. Audacity and Windows Media Player are free.

A third alternative is PolderbitS Sound Recorder and Editor. This software will record all incoming audio, automatically separate tracks, clean the audio with enhancement tools, add effects such as fade in and out between tracks and save the audio in a variety of formats, such as MP3. It also will record the audio to CD. The software is free to try.
