Using a VGA adapter with a Samsung HDTV ups the Dreamcast resolution ante.

The Sega Dreamcast was the first gaming system that wasn't PC-based to offer a VGA output. A precursor to now-standard 480-progressive game console resolution, the VGA output was a boon to anyone seeking a higher-resolution experience from a console gaming system. Many aftermarket manufacturers addressed this demand, which surprisingly many gamers never became aware of. Using a VGA adapter with the Dreamcast also allowed the gamer to switch between using the console on a PC monitor, and an S-video or composite output to a standard TV. With modern high-definition television sets such as those from Samsung, the VGA connection is direct and recommended.

Instructions

    • 1

Access the rear of the Dreamcast and the Samsung LCD TV. Note the locations of the Dreamcast "A/V OUT" and the Samsung's "VGA" or "PC" input.

    • 2

Plug the adapter's connector into the Dreamcast's "A/V OUT." Connect a VGA cable to the other end of the adapter.

    • 3

Route the VGA cable to the "VGA" or "PC" input on the back of the Samsung. Screw down the thumb screws on the VGA connector for both the adapter and TV connection.

Tips & Warnings

  • HDTVs that lack VGA inputs can also be used with the Dreamcast VGA adapter. Simply plug the VGA cable from the adapter to a VGA-to-component video adapter, then plug the component cables into that input on the set.
