How to Use a Boss DR-880 With Cubase

The Boss DR-880 is a portable, programmable beat generator loaded with hundreds of drum and bass presets and a full library of music and sound effects for layering original electronic tracks. In addition to functioning as a self-contained digital music device, the DR-880 contains both analogue and digital outputs, allowing smooth integration with digital audio software such as Cubase, a program designed for music recording, mixing and post-production.

Connect your DR-880 to your computer. The DR-880 contains a built-in USB interface, allowing you to connect directly to your PC using a USB A-to-B cable (standard USB on one side, mini USB on the opposite side). Plug the smaller, square connector into the USB port on the back of your DR-880 (indicated by the three-sided trident symbol directly above), and plug the rectangular USB connector into any available USB port on your computer. If you use an audio interface (an external soundcard) as part of your music setup, you can also achieve stereo sound by connecting two TRS cables into the "Individual" ports on the back of your DR-880, and into corresponding 1/4" "Input" or "Audio In" ports on your interface.

Open Cubase on your computer and access your "Device Setup" menu. Click "Devices" on the menu bar at the top of your screen and select "Device Setup" from the bottom of the list. A new menu will appear on your screen.

    • 3

Click "VST Audiobay," visible in the left column of your "Device Setup" menu, near the bottom of the list. When you select it, a new sub-menu will appear to the right, allowing you to select your interface or instrument from among the available input sources. Select "BOSS DR-880." From there, you can customize your settings or stick with Cubase's recommended default settings. Click the "Apply" button in the lower right corner of your window to save your changes.

Turn on your DR-880. Begin playing your saved sequences or presets or begin programming new sequences and listen as the sound transmits directly through Cubase on your personal computer. To record sequences from your DR-880, select a blank audio track on your Cubase window (your tracks are your horizontal recording spaces, each indicated by a number in the left column) and click "Record," which looks like a red button with a black circle in the center, appearing in the left column of each track.
