How to Find the Lost Network Security Key & Password
The network security key and password protect your wireless network from intrusion, according to Microsoft. When you set up your home network, your computer saved the information and uses it each time you access the network. As a result, you may have forgotten the security key and password because of they are infrequently used. Fortunately, you have several options to locate your network's security information. Several third-party software programs can search your system for the information. If all else fails, you can reset the modem and start from the beginning.

Call your Internet service provider (ISP) or the manufacturer of the router. If you did not change anything, they can provide the default information. Ask the representative where to find the network security key and the default password. Many routers have the network key affixed to the back or bottom on a label. Record this information for later use.

Download, install and run a network security key and password recovery tool (see Resource). These programs search your operating system for information related to the network and stored on the computer. WirelessKeyView, Wireless WEP Key Password Spy and Network Password Recovery Wizard are examples of programs that provide recovery assistance.

Reset the router. If you cannot find the security key and password, the only other option is to reset the router. Locate the small pinhole on the back of the router and press it using a safety pin or other pointed item. Enter the network security key and password provided by your ISP or the router's manufacturer.
