How to Edit an MDF
MDF files are database files that can be associated with Microsoft SQL Server, according to FileInfo.com, an online database of file extensions. MDF files contain essential data and schema used for database installations. MDF stand for "Microsoft Database File."
You can create, open and edit MDF files with Microsoft System Center Essentials with SQL and Microsoft Visual Studio 2010. Editing an MDF file extension allows you to open the file with a different application.

Right click the MDF file.

Click "Open With."

Select the "Choose Default Program" option.

Select the software you wish to use to open the file.

Click "Browse" only if Windows does not display any default software. Search for the application you wish to use, then click "Open."

Click "OK." Your MDF file will open.
