How to Replace the Fuel Filter on a 1986 Ford Ranger

The fuel filter on a 1986 Ford Ranger is important to the health of the engine. A dirty or damaged filter can cause lowered fuel efficiency, starting problems and engine damage. The 1986 Ranger has an in-line fuel filter, so changing it is less complicated than an in-tank fuel filter. It can be done with a few simple tools in a short amount of time.

Things You'll Need

• Screwdriver
• Drip pan
• Socket wrench

Instructions

1. Park the truck on a flat, level surface and set the parking brake. Remove the gas cap to release pressure on the fuel lines.

2. Remove the fuel lines from the fuel filter by prying off the clips with the screwdriver. The fuel filter is attached to the frame rail on the drivers side, underneath the cab. Place the drip pan under the fuel lines to catch any fuel that escapes.

3. Remove the bolts on the clamp that holds the fuel filter in place. Remove the clamp and pull the filter out of the housing bracket.

4. Place the new filter into the bracket, put on the clamp and tighten down the bolts with the socket wrench. Plug the fuel lines into the filter and squeeze the small white clamps onto the ends to keep them in place.

5. Turn on the Ranger. The gas pedal may need to be pushed a couple of times to help the fuel circulate. Check the new filter for fuel leaks.
