How to Change the Headlight Bulb on a 2001 Toyota Tacoma

The headlight bulbs on a 2001 Toyota Tacoma are located on the back side of the headlamp housing. Each headlamp contains a separate bulb for the high and low beam and low beams. In many states it is illegal to drive a vehicle with only one functioning headlight. Burned-out headlight bulbs must be replaced promptly to ensure the safe operation of your vehicle. Replacement headlight bulbs are available from auto parts stores and Toyota dealers.

Instructions

    • 1

Shift the Tacoma's transmission into park or first gear (manual). Turn off the ignition and apply the parking brake. Open the hood.

    • 2

Locate the burned-out headlight bulb. Depress the locking tab on the headlight connector and rotate the connector counterclockwise 90 degrees. Pull out the connector and the bulb as one unit.

    • 3

Remove the burned-out bulb from the connector and replace it with a new bulb. Install the connector and the bulb in the headlamp. Rotate the connector clockwise 90 degrees until in clicks, locking into place.

    • 4

Turn on the headlights and verify that the bulb is illuminated.
