VPN Shows That This Computer Can't Connect to the Remote Computer
VPNs, or virtual private networks, are used by companies to allow employees to work from home by accessing work networks over a secure Internet connection. If you work from home and are unable to access your VPN, the issue can sometimes be difficult to resolve. But, armed with a little know-how and some basic troubleshooting skills, you can isolate the problem and regain full access to your VPN in no time.

1
Reset your home Internet connection by unplugging the power cords of your Internet modem as well as any router or other home networking device. Count 30 seconds and plug all devices back in. Restart your computer and once again try and access your VPN.

2
Unplug the Ethernet cable that attaches your modem to your router from the router and plug it straight into one of the computer's Ethernet ports. Again, reset the modem using the same process as described in step 1. Try accessing your VPN again. If access is restored at this point, you may need to contact the manufacturer of the router and have them troubleshoot it individually.

3
Open an Internet browser outside of your VPN to see if your Internet connection is down. If you are not able to bring up any webpages in an Internet browser, the problem is not isolated to your VPN and you will need to report a lack of connectivity to your Internet service provider's technical support department. If you are able to load webpages but you still have no access to your VPN, it is now time to contact your work IT department.

4
Contact your work IT department and have them troubleshoot your VPN connection. Many VPNs require a static IP address in order to work properly; if yours does it is a good idea to make sure your connection is using the static IP and that it has been connected to your networking equipment correctly.
