DSL Modem Won't Connect

DSL Modem Won't Connect thumbnail
Troubleshoot your modem when you cannot connect to the Internet.

DSL stands for digital subscriber line. Your DSL modem connects you to the Internet. In this day and age, most of us would be lost without the Internet, so when that little green light flickers out and the connection is lost, we tend to get upset. The first thing you need to do is to check your DSL modem connection. If this doesn't work, then call your local service provider. It is usually a problem with your modem connection.

Instructions

    • 1

Check your connections. Wires could have come loose. Toddlers and pets can often loosen these. Twist each connection, or even give them a little wiggle to see if the connection will come back on.

    • 2

Reset your DSL modem. Press the reset button on the front of your modem.

    • 3

Check the DSL lights on the modem. They should all be green. If your DSL light is red, it is time to call your provider. The problem could be in your phone line and your provider will need to fix it.

    • 4

Contact the modem manufacturer to determine if the device meets the Internet provider's standards. If this is the case, you might need to get a new modem.

    • 5

Check your router to see if all lights are flashing. Your DSL modem might not be connecting because your router is not working anymore. Unplug your DSL modem from the router and directly to the Ethernet port on your computer. If your DSL modem now connects, you might need to replace your router.

Connect your phone jack through the DSL filter, if you need to install one.
