How to Remove Permanent Hair Color From Surfaces

Wear gloves to protect hands from dye stains.

It is not uncommon to get dye stains on countertops, sinks, tubs and even on your skin after you have colored your hair with permanent dye. The dye can splatter during the application process or pour out of bottle that has not been tightly closed. The first few times you wash your hair after dying it, excess dye may wash out onto your bathtub. Wash away the telltale signs of hair color by following the directions below.

Things You'll Need

• Vaseline
• Cloth
• Sponge
• Toothpaste
• 1 cup baking soda
• 1/2 cup water
• Cotton balls
• Nail polish remover containing acetone
• Toilet bowel cleaner with bleach

Instructions

Remove Stains from Skin

1. Apply small dollop of Vaseline to dye stain with fingers.

2. Rub the Vaseline into the dye stain using cloth for a few seconds.

3. Rub off Vaseline using cloth. The dye should come off with the Vaseline.

4. Squeeze a small amount of toothpaste onto finger.

5. Rub toothpaste to dye stain using cloth for a few seconds.

6. Remove toothpaste using damp cloth. Dye should come off with toothpaste.

Remove Dye from Countertops

1. Mix together 1 cup of baking soda with ½ cup of water.

2. Apply the mixture to the stain using cloth or sponge.

3. Allow mixture to dry onto the stain.

4. Wipe mixture off using damp cloth. If the stain has not budged you will need to continue working on it.

5. Wet a cotton ball with nail polish remover containing acetone.

6. Apply the nail polish remover to the stain. Rub stain off with cotton ball.

7. Rub area with wet cloth to remove any access nail polish remover.

Remove Stains from Sinks and Bathtubs

1. Apply toilet bowel cleaner with bleach to damp sponge.

2. Rub stain with sponge.

3. Rinse off toilet bowel cleaner. If stain remains repeat the process.

Tips & Warnings

• To prevent skin stains in the future rub Vaseline along your hair line prior to coloring your hair.

• Use gloves when applying dye to guard your hands from the color, but remember to place the gloves directly in the trash can after use instead of on the counter.

• Lay newspaper down on countertop before using hair color.

• Nail polish remover may remove paint or cause other adverse effects on countertops. Test the nail polish out on a small area before using it to remove a stain.

• Toilet bowel cleaner with bleach may bleach surface.

• Sensitive skin may become irritated when rubbed with toothpaste.
