How to Filter Sulfur & Lime From Your Well Water
Lime and sulfur are inorganic materials that are readily found in nature and can seep into well water. If your water smells like rotten eggs, it's caused by sulfur in your water. If you have lime scale buildup, it's caused by lime (referring to calcium-containing inorganic materials). Water filtration systems can be purchased to filter both sulfur and lime out of your well water, as well as other harmful substances that can be lurking in it. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Research different types of water filtration systems. Three of the best kinds of water filtration systems that remove inorganic materials such as lime and sulfur, in addition to organic contaminants, chlorine and often fluoride are carbon filters, reverse osmosis systems and copper-zinc+carbon+fluoride removal filter systems. Each kind of filtration system has pros and cons. Carbon filters are typically cheap and easy to install. Reverse osmosis systems are expensive and challenging to install and operate, while copper-zinc+carbon+fluoride removal systems are initially expensive, but very easy to install and might be the most effective filtration system. All three systems are known to be effective in filtering inorganic contaminants such as lime and sulfur out of well water.

Decide which system is right for you considering price, installation and your water filtering goals.

-
3
Purchase the water filtration system you decide on and wait for it to be delivered to your home.
-
4
Install the filtration system. Installation will differ depending on the system you choose. For a reverse osmosis system, you will likely need to call a plumber to install it. If a carbon filter or copper-zinc+carbon+fluoride removal system was chosen, you will likely be able to install it yourself.
-
5
Add any required supplies to the filtration system such as salt or a separate filtration cartridge. The instructions for your filtration system should indicate what, if any, additional supplies are required.
-
6
Drink your lime and sulfur-free well water.

Tips & Warnings
Even houses that are equipped with filtration systems, if they're located in an area with a lot of sulfur and the water has not been run for a significant amount of time, the water might have a distinctly sulfur smell to it. To remedy this, turn every faucet in the house on full force until the filter's tank runs dry. Turn off the faucets. When the filter refills, the water should be better.
