How to Make Muay Thai Pads

A form of mixed martial arts created in Thailand, Muay Thai boxing was first used as a means of self-defense. It has evolved into an internationally recognized prize fighting sport. Muay Thai differs from boxing by using the whole body for attacks and defense. Training bags and pads are different from those used by boxers and are designed to accommodate the use of the full body for attacks and defense.

  • 3 pieces high-density foam, 24-by-8-by-2-inch
  • 2 Strips of cow leather, 5 1/2-by-23 1/2-inch
  • 2 Strips of cow leather, 5 1/2-by-7 1/2-inch

Instructions

    • 1

Round the corners of the rectangular-shaped high-density foam pads. Pile the three high-density foam pieces on top of each other.

    • 2

Run the 23 1/2-by-5 1/2-inch strips of cow leather down each of the long sides of the foam stack. Run the 5 1/2-by-7 1/2-inch strips of leather along the short ends of the foam stack. These measurements will make sure the leather is not quite as wide as each foam surface so that when you sew it together the pad seals tightly.

    • 3

Run your heavy-duty stitching material through each seam of the leather pieces, joining them together. You may have to change sides before completing one side of the stitch so the seams and leather remain tight around the foam pads.

    • 4

Run the 7 1/2-by-23 1/2-inch leather strips along both large, flat surfaces of the pad. Stitch them to the rest of the leather strips. Make sure every seam is stitched tightly.

    • 5

Stitch to the back side of the pad two or three velcro handles. These can be reinforced with leather as well. These will allow the pad to be mounted on an arm or leg.

Tips & Warnings

  • Customize your Muay Thai pads with colored cow leather and colored stitching.

  • To make them larger or smaller, use arm length to determine the length of the foam and leather strips.
