You spend a small fortune on a pair of prescription glasses, only to find a week or two later that they've already picked up a few scratches. Is there a way to remove scratches from prescription glasses? The answer: It depends on the scratch and the lens. Smaller scratches can certainly be removed, especially from plastic lenses. Deeper scratches may require a new lens.

Take note of the type of lens in your glasses. If your lenses are glass, you must be realistic; your efforts to remove scratches may be unsuccessful. If your lenses are plastic, you are far more likely to to remove the scratches successfully.

Apply a dab of toothpaste to the scratched area of the lens.

Use a soft cloth to gently rub the scratched area with the toothpaste. Rub the toothpaste into the scratch itself and all around. Rub in circular fashion for several minutes.

Use water and clean portions of the soft cloth to wash away the toothpaste.

Repeat steps two through four two more times. When finished, be sure to thoroughly dry your lenses with the cloth.

Apply a squirt of a glass-etching product such as Armor Etch. Use the soft cloth to rub it in well, then clean off as the directions accompanying the product instruct. This can be used only on plastic lenses.

Tip

  • Avoid rubbing too hard. Wearing away too much of your lens can affect their vision-correcting ability.
