How to Repair Windows XP Installations: Missing Components

A number of default programs or components are loaded onto your computer by default when Windows XP is installed. They are programs such as Microsoft Paint, Outlook Express, Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player. However, on occasion problems may arise in their install process; the program may not install or function properly after the Windows XP setup. You can easily access these components from the "Windows Components Wizard" in the Windows XP Control Panel to repair or reinstall them.

      Place your Windows XP Setup disc in your CD drive.

      Click "Start," select "Settings" choose "Control Panel."

      Double-click "Add or Remove Programs." This opens the programs applet.

      Click "Add/Remove Windows Components" on the left pane. The Windows Components Wizard opens with a list of installed or non installed components on your computer.

      Check the box next to the component or components you want to reinstall or repair and click "Next." The Setup program is now installing or repairing your windows missing component. When done, restart your computer. If the program is installed, you may need to remove it and then add it back to have it re-install properly.
