How to Finish a Fender Neck
The famous Fender guitar was invented by Leo Fender who sought for a way to improve the sound as well as the production of the electric guitar. The result was the Telecaster, a solid-body, Spanish-style electric guitar that took the musical scene by storm. The next invention was the Stratocaster, and the rest is history. When you have a Fender, you may wish to change the appearance. One way to do this is to refinish the Fender neck.

1
Remove the neck from the guitar by unscrewing the screws that secure it. Remove the strings and pegs. Leave the face of the peg head or head stock intact.
-
2
Place a piece of paper over the peg head. Cut a piece of cardboard that is the same size as the peg head and tape it securely with masking tape. The peg head is located on the upper portion of the neck; the strings of the guitar attach to it while the tuning keys allow you to tune the guitar.

3
Apply paste stripper to the neck of the guitar with a brush.
-
4
Apply tape to the fingerboard. Sand the neck of the fender using #220 or #320 sandpaper.
-
5
Reattach the neck to the guitar and tighten the screws. Apply a coat of lacquer to the guitar neck and allow it to dry completely. Wait until the next day before applying a second coat of lacquer to the first. The lacquer will help preserve the wood while not allowing the color from the paint penetrate the grain. When the lacquer is dry, continue to the next step.
-
6
Apply paint of the color you wish to the neck of the guitar with a paint sprayer. Make sure that you apply the paint in thin coats so that it will not streak. Allow the paint to dry completely before continuing.
-
7
Apply three more coats of clear coat. Allow the paint to dry completely before each application.
-
8
Restring the guitar, being careful to keep the strings in the proper order as well as not to tighten them too much so causing them to break.
