How to Use Ventolin With a Spacer

How to Use Ventolin With a Spacer thumbnail
Inhalers can be carried in a purse or pocket for quick use.

Ventolin, a brochodilator, works to quickly open the airways in the event of constriction. Ventolin inhalers can be used by inserting in the mouth, and pressing the top of the inhaler and breathing in deeply at the same time. For young children or those who have trouble taking deep breaths, a spacer can help them breathe in their full dose of Ventolin more easily.

Instructions

    • 1

Shake the inhaler and then insert the mouthpiece into the opening on the spacer. Push and wiggle the mouth piece until it is securely in place. This creates a seal to prevent the Ventolin mist from escaping.

    • 2

Press the inhaler one time and insert the end of the spacer into your mouth and take a deep breath. Hold your breath for as long as possible, preferably 10 seconds. Take another deep breath. Keep the spacer in place for 30 seconds. This will help ensure you have inhaled all of the Ventolin mist. If your spacer has an open end similar to a face mask, place the spacer against the face and then press the inhaler, do not remove the spacer until 30 seconds has passed. Repeat a second time if your doctor has prescribed two puffs of Ventolin.

    • 3

Remove the Ventolin inhaler and clean the spacer at least once per week using soapy dishwater. Allow the spacer to completely dry before using.

Tips & Warnings

  • Infants or small children using a spacer with an open end will need an adult to hold the spacer in place. The child will breath normally until the mist is gone. Leave in place a minimum of 30 seconds to ensure the child has breathed in the mist.
