Where Is the EGR Valve Located on a 99 Miata?

The 1999 Mazda Miata was involved in a factory recall directly involving the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve. The oversize, sharp, metal gasket used to mount the valve cut into the wiring harness that powered the last fuel injector near the back of the engine. Mazda asked its dealers to bend the gasket out of the way and add protection to the wiring harness. When inspecting the EGR valve, make sure the gasket has been modified.

Instructions

    • 1

Raise the hood of the Miata.

    • 2

Look along the left side of the engine and follow the valve cover to the firewall.

    • 3

Follow a small, round exhaust pipe that screws into the bottom of the valve. Verify that this is the EGR valve by the electrical wires that plug into the top of the unit. These wires communicate with the vehicle computer to operate the opening and closing of the valve.

    • 4

Inspect the EGR valve gasket to make sure it has been modified to meet the factory recall standards and no harness wires are damaged. If not, contact a Mazda dealer.

Tips & Warnings

  • EGR valves are very hot, being connected to the exhaust system. Allow the vehicle to cool and use caution when servicing them.
