How to Reset a Chevy S10 Computer

by Alibaster Smith

The computer on your Chevy S10 ultimately controls a variety of vehicle functions from air and fuel delivery to generating and storing fault codes. When the computer generates a fault code, it means that there is something wrong with one of the vehicle's critical systems—typically a sensor related to the emissions control system. This problem needs to be fixed to prevent major damage to the engine and related components. A free diagnostic test can be done by any auto parts store to determine the cause of the problem. After the problem has been fixed, you need to know how to reset the Chevy's computer.

Step 1

Open the fuse panel cover using your fingers. The fuse panel cover is in the driver's side foot well, under the steering column.

Step 2

Locate the open onboard diagnostic port to the left of the main fuse panel. This port will be rectangular in shape.

Step 3

Plug the OBD plug into the open port.

Step 4

Turn the ignition on but don't crank the engine.

Step 5

Press the "erase" button on the scan tool to clear the codes on the computer, then run the engine for approximately 10 minutes to allow the computer to fully reset itself.
