How to Replace the Fuel Filter on a 2000 GMC Sonoma

by Russell Wood

The fuel filter on a 2000 GMC Sonoma is mounted in between the gas tank and the engine. Its job is to stop any harmful sediment from entering the fuel injection system and potentially damaging the engine. Fuel flow to the engine will be impaired and the engine may run poorly if the filter is not changed on a regular basis. You can prevent this from happening by replacing the filter with a new one.

Step 1

Pop the hood. Locate the fuel rail on the top of the engine. Connect the fuel-pressure gauge to the fuel rail by hand. Put the drain line from the gauge into the drain pan and press the pressure relief button on the gauge. Let the excess fuel empty into the drain pan. Remove the gauge and remove the gas cap from the gas tank.

Step 2

Lift the driver's side of the truck with the jack and put it on jack stands. Locate the fuel filter on the inside of the driver's-side frame rail. Remove the clips on the fuel lines running in and out of the fuel filter and pull the lines off the filter.

Step 3

Unbolt the fuel filter from the frame rail using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Discard the old fuel filter.

Step 4

Install the replacement fuel filter in the bracket on the frame rail using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Verify that the stamped arrow on the filter is aimed towards the engine. Push the fuel lines onto the fuel filter until it clicks on each side.

Step 5

Lower the Sonoma off the jack stands using the jack. Start the truck and look underneath the truck to make sure there are no fuel leaks. If so, repeat the steps and recheck the fittings to the filter.
