How to Transfer Data From One Hard Drive to a New

When you purchase and install a new hard drive in your computer, you may wish to transfer some or all of the data from one of your other hard drives to the new one. If you want to do this, you can simply copy the files from your old hard drive to your new one using the Windows Explorer program and the computer's copy/paste feature.

Instructions

    • 1

Ensure that both your old hard drive and your new hard drive are connected to your computer.

    • 2

Turn on your computer and log in to Windows.

    • 3

Right-click on the "Start" button and click "Open Windows Explorer." Repeat this step so that you have two Windows Explorer windows open.

    • 4

Click on the old hard drive in the first Windows Explorer window, highlight all of the files and folders in the drive and press "CTRL" and "C" to copy the items.

    • 5

Select the second Windows Explorer window and click on the new hard drive. Press "CTRL" and "V" to paste all of the data from the old hard drive to the new drive.

    • 6

Go back to the first Windows Explorer window and press "Delete" then click "Yes" to delete all of the files from the original hard drive once the copy process is complete.
