Sock Monkey Tutorial
Sock monkeys have a whimsical, playful quality that appeals to parents looking for inexpensive entertainment for children. If your child would enjoy an inexpensive--yet fun--doll, consider making a sock monkey. You can make one out of materials that you have lying around the house. Once finished, you can give the sock monkey to a child, or simply keep it for yourself.
Things You'll Need
- 2 large socks
- Ruler
- Wool or cotton stuffing
- Needle
- Thread
- Scissors
- Straight pins
- 2 buttons
Instructions
-
-
1
Turn both large socks inside out.
-
2
Place one of the socks on a table top with the heel of the sock facing upward. Flatten the sock, and pin the edges with straight pins to hold the flattened shape.
-
-
3
Draw a line down the center of the leg part of the sock. Sew down either side of the line with a needle and thread, sewing out about 1/4 inch on either side of the line. Once each sewing line reaches the opening of the sock, sew the opening closed with a curved line.
-
4
Cut down the line you marked with scissors. This will separate the leg of the sock into two monkey legs. There will be a hole at the top of the monkey legs.
-
5
Turn the sock right side out using the hole.
-
6
Stuff the sock and monkey legs with cotton or wool stuffing.
-
7
Sew the opening at the top of the legs closed.
-
8
Place the second sock onto the table with the heel facing to the side. Draw a line and pin the top of the sock one inch from the edge down the length of the sock.
-
9
Sew down the line and curve it at the opening of the sock. Cut 1/4 inch away from the sewed line to detach the marked area from the sock. This will be the tail of the monkey.
-
10
Cut off the toe portion of the sock, then turn the tail right side out.
-
11
Stuff the tail with wool or cotton stuffing.
-
12
Cut the remaining piece of sock into thirds, detaching the sections at the heel. The heel will be the monkey's mouthpiece, and the other two pieces will be the monkey's ears and arms.
-
13
Cut the arm piece into two long pieces and sew them with a curved end as you did the tail.
-
14
Cut the ear piece into four equally sized pieces. Place the pieces together in groups of two, and sew three-fourths around each set.
-
15
Turn the arm and ear pieces right side out. Stuff them with stuffing.
-
16
Sew the tail to the backside of the monkey. Sew the ears onto the sides of the head of the monkey. Sew the arms on either side of the monkey's body.
-
17
Pin the mouthpiece of the monkey, which will be the heel of the sock, onto the monkey's face. Push stuffing into the mouthpiece, then sew around the perimeter of the mouth.
-
18
Sew two buttons onto the face of the monkey above its eyes. Stitch a smile onto the mouthpiece, and the monkey will be complete.
