How to Troubleshoot an HP 1100

Hewlett-Packard, or HP, provides a line of laserjet printers including the discontinued HP 1100 series. Download drivers and software for this discontinued series direct from the HP website. Start with quality paper to avoid many printing problems including light or faded print, toner specks or misformed characters. HP recommends only using HP brand paper and other print media. Using paper not recommended by HP may cause problems that require repair. HP does not cover such repairs under its warranty or service agreements. You may also receive error messages when using the printer that you can resolve by checking cords and your printer settings.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the "Go" button on the control panel to wake the printer from PowerSave mode. If it does not wake up check that the power cord is securely plugged into a 220 to 240 volt outlet.

    • 2

Turn the printer off and then back on if all lights on the control panel are lit, signaling that a fatal error has occurred. If this does not resolve the issue, contact HP Customer Service (see Resources).

    • 3

Close the printer door if the right small light on the control panel lights up. If this does not resolve your issue verify the paper you are using is not wrinkled or folded. Look for a paper jam. Grip both sides of any visible paper pieces and pull gently. Open the printer door and pull out the printer cartridge. Grip both sides of the paper and pull out.

    • 4

Verify the paper you are using is not wrinkled or folded if more than one sheet feeds through the printer. Remove several sheets from the paper input tray as it may be overfilled, causing the printer to pull in too many sheets.

    • 5

Adjust the guides to the paper's width and try reprinting if the print is skewed on the printed sheet.

    • 6

Disconnect the parallel cable, wait a few minutes and reconnect it if you receive garbled or incomplete text on the printed paper. Test it by printing another job that has printed correctly previously. Connect a new IEEE-1284 compliant parallel cable if it continues to print garbled or incomplete text.

    • 7

Press and hold the "Go" button on the control panel for 5 seconds to reset it.

    • 8

Unplug the printer and allow it to cool to change the pickup roller if your printer often feeds no paper or no more than one sheet. Open the door and pull out the toner cartridge. Move the bottom of the pickup roller towards the front. Pull the pickup roller out. Replace, in the same spot, with a new pickup roller. Move the pickup roller's bottom towards the back until it snaps into place. Use a pencil's eraser to press the spring arm so it sits behind the white cam roller. Replace the toner cartridge and close the printer door.

    • 9

Verify the ready light is on and all cords and cables are securely connected if you receive the error "Printer not responding/error writing to LTP1." If neither solution resolves the issue, disconnect and reconnect all power cords or use a new IEEE-1284 compliant parallel cable.

    • 10

Restart your computer if you receive the error "Illegal operation/General protection fault/Spool 32 error." To prevent receiving this error in the future run fewer application while printing--close all unnecessary applications, avoid performing tasks such as sending a fax or watching a video clip while printing, and delete all temporary files.
