How to Change a Tailgate Cable
Replacing the tailgate cables is necessary when the cables are showing signs of wear. The purpose of the cables is to ensure the tailgate is level with the truck when it is opened. In the absence of the cables, the tailgate will hit the bumper and possibly damage the tailgate. Replacing the cables will not take very much time as it is held up by a single bolt.
Instructions

-
1
Pull the latch up to release the tailgate. Allow the tailgate to drop down three-quarters of the way and rest on a free hand or the knee.
-
2
Locate the end of the cable and push it down. Pull it off the stud once there is clearance on the loop at the cable end. Allow the tailgate to drop the remaining bit and rest on its own.
-
-
3
Unbolt the other end of the cable with a socket wrench or Torx bit. This is depending on what type of bolt is used to secure the cable.
-
4
Bolt the new cable to the tailgate. Tighten with the socket wrench or Torx bit.
-
5
Prop the tailgate one-quarter of the way up so there is slack in the cable. Push the other end on to the stud and pull it back to lock the cable on to the stud.
-
6
Repeat this process to replace the other tailgate cable. Close the tailgate when complete.
