Instructions

  1. Range

    • 1

Make sure the stove is off. All of the dials should be set to "Off."

    • 2

Clear off the removable burners and put them somewhere safe.

    • 3

Lift open the top of the range. Some ranges open from the left or right, while other ranges open from the side directly in front of you.

    • 4

Locate the pilot ports between the burners. In most stoves, there are two pilot ports situated midway between two burners.

    • 5

      Light the match.

    • 6

Hold the lit match close to the port. The pilot light will come on.

    • 7

Lower the top of the range and replace the burners.

    Oven

    • 8

      Turn the oven off.

    • 9

Open the broiler door underneath the main oven door.

    • 10

Locate the thermocouple. The thermocouple is a small spout-like device set far back in the oven's broiler. The tip of the thermocouple is where the pilot light is lit.

    • 11

      Light a long match.

    • 12

Hold the flame close to the thermocouple and wait for 15 to 20 seconds. The thermocouple detects cold and shuts off the gas. To get the gas going again, the thermocouple needs to be warm. After 15 to 20 seconds, the pilot light lights up.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the pilot lights go out repeatedly, call a maintenance professional to look at the stove.

  • If you ever smell gas, call the gas company at once.
