How to Design Your Own Leather Wrist Cuff

Leather is a much sought-after material that is desired as much for its physical strength, as its ability to make a fashion statement. Leather bracelets or wrist cuffs make for thick, highly-noticeable accessories for both men and women, who can make the them look either sweet or dangerous. Make the statement you most want to make by customizing your own leather wrist cuff design.

Instructions

1. Use a strip of scratch paper to make a pattern and determine how thick you want your cuff to be. Cut a thick strip measuring three and a half inches by 12 inches. Wrap it around your wrist and trim it down until you get a thickness you like and enough length to wrap comfortably around your wrist and overlap itself by at least an inch.

2. Choose a type and thickness of leather to use. Most wrist cuffs are made from leather about a quarter of an inch thick with a patent (shiny) finish, as this is physically durable and visually resistant to weathering. Thinner leathers will have a more delicate look, but will be more prone to wrinkling. Thicker leathers will be tougher but more unwieldy and harder to bend. If you choose a suede finish, bear in mind that it will need regular cleaning and brushing to restore its nap.

3. Decide what color and type of dye you want to use. Leather dyes come in spirit-based and water-based formulas. Spirit-based dyes create deeper coloring while water dyes leave more of the leather's natural features visible. If you buy pre-dyed leather, the choices of dye type will be the same.

4. Create a centerpiece design for the cuff, if desired. This may be a stamped, etched or burned design, or may consist of a metal buckle or decoration attached with rivets. Mark the positioning of this piece on your paper pattern while it's still on your wrist.

5. Choose other decorations and details, if desired. You may want additional etching or burning on the rest of the band, or you may decorate it with rhinestones, rivets or grommets. Sketch the positioning and shape of these items on the paper pattern, as well.

6. Plan the clasp or closure. Choose between a buckle, Velcro or snaps. Snaps and buckles are the most sturdy, with buckles requiring more material but laying flatter against the skin. Velcro closures are quick and convenient, but less secure.
