ATI Display Driver Won't Install

Your computer's graphics card requires specific device drivers that enable all of its features and allow it to work without conflict or problems. If you are unable to install the ATI display drivers for your ATI-based graphics card, you may not be able to play the latest computer games or have proper display resolution. The ATI drivers may be in conflict with other drivers on the system, or the hardware may be failing or not properly installed.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to "Start" and then "Control Panel."

    • 2

Click "Programs and Features." Scroll through the list for the "ATI Catalyst Install Manager." Click "Change" and "Next." Choose "Express Uninstall All ATI Software." Click "Next" through the prompts and restart your computer when the uninstallation wizard is complete.

    • 3

Download the latest ATI display drivers for your device at AMD's graphics driver download site (see Resources). Double-click the downloaded file. Choose "ATI Catalyst Driver" and click "Next." Click "Install," "Next" and "Install" to begin the new driver installation. Click "Express," "Next," "Accept, "Yes," and "Finish." Restart your computer and check whether the graphics card is working properly.

    • 4

Shut down your computer if the installation wizard says that it cannot find compatible hardware on the computer. The graphics card may not be seated correctly in the computer case, and may thus not be detected properly by the operating system.

    • 5

Remove your computer's power cable and peripheral cables from the back of the computer. Use the Phillips-head screwdriver to unscrew your computer's side panel if necessary; some computer cases simply slide out or swing open.

    • 6

Look for your ATI video card. It will be installed in your PCI, PCI-E or AGP slot, located near the back of the computer case. Disconnect the power cable from the back of the card and unscrew the mounting plate from the case. Pull the card firmly toward you. Certain motherboards may have a latch holding the card in. Push the latch open to remove the card. Use canned air to clean off the card if it is dusty or dirty. Press the card firmly back into the slot. Reconnect the power cable and screw the card into the case. Restart your computer and attempt to install the drivers again.
