Tracking down the title history of an automobile in West Virginia can be done at a local branch of the West Virginia DMV or through the state's online portal. Once you fill out the appropriate forms and submit the nominal fee, you will be given a title history; or if you choose, a duplicate title along with the history.

Requesting the title in person

Step 1

Go to your local West Virginia branch of the DMV. Request the Affidavit of Duplicate Title for a Vehicle or Watercraft.

Step 2

Fill out the Affidavit of Duplicate Title for a Vehicle or Watercraft completely, taking time to answer each question as fully as you can. You may need the VIN number or other identifying codes for the title search.

Step 3

Present the completed form to the clerk along with the required fee, which was $10 as of 2010. The clerk will provide the title history and if you requested it, a duplicate title.

Requesting your title online

Step 1

Go to the West Virginia website and navigate to the Vehicle License Information section. Download the Affidavit of Duplicate Title for a Vehicle or Watercraft.

Step 2

Fill the form out online and then hit "Submit." You will be directed to the secure payment page where you must pay the fee with a valid credit or debit card. Hit "Submit."

Step 3

Print out the title page and history; or if you requested a duplicate title, wait for the title to be delivered in the mail.
