How to Dismount Car Tires

Dismounting a tire involves removing the rubber tire from the rim

Dismounting a tire separates the rubber tire from the metal rim. To successfully dismount a tire you must first remove the wheel from the vehicle. You will need several tools to remove the wheel and dismount the tire, such as a jack and tire pliers. These tools can be purchased from automotive stores. If you are dismounting the tire to change the tire, rotate the tire or balance the tire, have a professional remount the tire for you. Remounting a tire must be done correctly to avoid dangerous outcomes like blown out tires.

Things You'll Need

• Wheel blocks
• Jack
• Jack stand
• Lug wrench
• Tire pliers
• Liquid soap or bead lubricant
• Rubber mallet

Instructions

1. Place wheel blocks beneath the wheels that you are not working on to ensure that the vehicle does not roll.

2. Insert the jack under the vehicle and elevate the car until you can slide a jack stand under it. Check the owner's manual to learn where to place the jack stands. Insert the jack stand and lower the vehicle so that the stand is supporting the weight of the car.

3. Remove the wheel from the car using a lug wrench.

4. Deflate the tire and rest the wheel on the ground. Insert tire pliers into the rim at the bead, using a mallet to get the pliers under the rim if necessary. If you do not have tier pliers, you can use a long, thin tool such as an iron to break apart the bead from the rim. Work the pliers around the entire length of the rim to break the bead.

5. Push down on the lever of the tire pliers to loosen the tire from the rim. If you are not using tire pliers, use your hands to push down on the tire or stand on the tire to push it away from the rim.

6. Lubricate the rim and tire bead with liquid soap or a bead lubricant purchased from an automotive store. The lubricant will protect the tire during removal.

7. Pull the tire over the rim using the pliers or an iron. Work around the rim to continue pulling the tire until the entire side of the tire is over the rim.

8. Flip the tire so that the side with the rubber outside of the rim is on the ground. Pull the rim up toward you while gently pushing the tire down to remove the rim from the tire.

Tips & Warnings

• Wear long clothing, work boots and gloves when dismounting a car tire.
