How to Restore Deleted Photos From a Camera

How to Restore Deleted Photos From a Camera thumbnail
Deleted photos, like deleted files, can almost always be retrieved with the right software.

The evolution of the camera to digital has allowed pictures to be saved into a central memory, transported efficiently and processed over and over again. Deleting photos has become an effect of pushing a single button, so once a photo is deleted, and there is no physical photo or film, retrieving that photo can be difficult unless you know where to look. Photos are stored onto a memory chip inside the camera, with each memory chip capable of holding a different amount of pictures. Using certain tools, you can restore your deleted photos.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the memory card from the digital camera and check to see if the photos got saved onto the internal memory of the camera. If this is not the case, move to Step 2. If they are saved on the internal memory, then you can plug the camera into the computer, most likely using a USB cable, and either copy and paste the photos from the camera into a file on the computer or click and drag the photos into a folder on the computer.

    • 2

Connect the camera's memory card into a computer or connect the camera directly into the computer. If there's no way to connect the camera or the memory card directly into the computer, then you will need to purchase an external USB card reader so that the camera or memory card can connect to your computer.

    • 3

Download and install a digital photo recovery software. Follow the instructions in the software. The software will connect to the digital camera's or memory card's files. Click the retrieve option and access the deleted files.

    • 4

Save the pictures onto the computer in a file. Either copy the pictures and paste the into a new file or physically drag the file into a new folder. This saves the deleted files onto the computer for future use.

Tips & Warnings

  • According to the website Card Recovery, "Don't take more pictures on your memory card if you find you have deleted the pictures by mistake. Or it may cause overwriting and make them unrecoverable."

  • Some cameras have permanent deleting systems that prohibit users from retrieving deleted photos.
