How to Store Powdered Buttermilk

Buttermilk is a useful ingredient in many recipes, ranging from creating buttermilk pancakes to making the perfect crème fraiche to drizzle over them. You may not be able to use a large amount of fresh buttermilk at one time, however. In this case, buying powdered buttermilk---which you can store for much longer than the fresh version---may be your best bet. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Pour your powdered buttermilk into a clean, completely dry container. Ideally, this container should be made of opaque glass to help keep out the light.

    • 2

Place the lid onto your container of buttermilk and seal it tightly. It is important that the container be airtight, as any moisture that reaches your dried buttermilk will cause it to go bad or clump.

    • 3

Put your container into a part of your house that stays dark, cool and dry. It is not necessary to keep the container in the refrigerator, but it must be out of direct sunlight and in an area that does not get hot or change dramatically in temperature.

    • 4

Use your powdered buttermilk within about a year if it is stored in the ideal conditions with an airtight container, no sunlight and no moisture. Otherwise, use it within several weeks.
