How to Repair XP Pro Registry

The Windows XP Professional registry, the "brain" of the operating system (OS), stores a hierarchical database of keys and values corresponding to each process, service and application on the system. A corrupt registry may produce the following error at startup:

"Stop: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE or its log or alternate."

If Windows XP Pro produces this or a similar error, you can repair the registry through the Recovery Console.
