How to Set Up a Fax on a Cable Telephone System

Fax machines scan and send documents and printed images over a data line, which can be a traditional phone line or a cable line such as used for subscriber TV service. Fax machines can also receive incoming faxes sent to you by others. Many modern fax machines are integrated into "all-in-one" devices that include a scanner and printer. All connect in essentially the same way with modular telephone jacks and plugs.

Things You'll Need

• Cable line service, including modem
• Telephone line with modular plug on each end

Instructions

1. Connect one end of a telephone line to the cable modem supplied by your cable service provider. Use one of the standard telephone jacks on the back or side of the modem. Cable modems are typically equipped with at least three telephone jacks.

2. Plug the other end of the phone line into the "Line IN" jack on the back of your fax machine.

3. Press the toggle switch on the back of the modem and the fax machine to turn on both devices.

4. Lift the handset from the cradle of the fax machine and listen for a dial tone. When you hear the tone, the fax machine is ready to send and receive.
