How to Remove Slats on Blinds

How to Remove Slats on Blinds thumbnail
Shortening or replacing blind slats can be done at home.

Mini-blind slats can become damaged from cats trying to get in the window, or the blind itself could be a little long for the window and need to be shortened. In either case, you can remove the slats from the mini blind instead of buying a new blind. Although the job is tedious, it can be done either while the blind is hanging in the window or lying on a table. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Use the lift cord to lengthen the blind so that you can see each blind and the bottom rail. Leave the blind in the window, or pull it out from the mounts and lay the blind on a table so that it is stretched out as it would be in a window.

    • 2

Use a butter knife or a flat-tip screwdriver to remove the plug on the bottom of the bottom rail. There will be two to three plugs, depending on the size of the blind. Once the plugs are removed, use a tweezer to pull the knotted lift cord and ladder string out from the plug hole.

    • 3

Use scissors to cut the knot from each of the lift cords. Pull the lift cords out of the bottom rail. Keep pulling the lift cords from each blind slat that you need to remove.

    • 4

Pull the slats out of the string ladder after the lift cord has been removed from the slat. When all of the blind slats have been removed, pull the bottom rail out of the string ladder and move it to the last position under the last slat.

    • 5

Rethread the lift cord through the holes in the bottom rail. Tie a knot in each of the lift cords, making sure that the knots and lift cord are even with the others. Cut the cord below the knot, leaving a tail about 1/2-inch long. Cut the remaining string ladder so that it is only 1/2-inch long.

    • 6

Tuck the knot and remaining ladder string inside the plug hole on the bottom of the bottom rail. Place the plug on the hole and press down firmly so it snaps into place. Place the extra slats in a safe place if the slats are not damaged.
