How do I Install A Home Steam Shower?

For homeowners wanting to take relaxation to the next level, the conversion of an existing shower into a steam shower is an option to consider. Steam showers are trendy and affordable. If you have basic knowledge of plumbing, simple carpentry skills and the ability to read and understand instructions, you can create your own personal oasis at home without breaking the bank.

• Existing shower
• Dome-shaped or slanted shower cover
• Vapor barrier
• Ceramic tile, fiberglass, or natural stone
• Treated lumber
• Steam shower door

Instructions

1. Cover the roof of your existing shower. The cover should be dome-shaped or sloped to easily shed water. Shower covers come in several materials including acrylic, fiberglass and stainless steel. All can be purchased at your local home improvement store. The ceiling should be no higher than 8 feet.

2. Use treated lumber anywhere wood is called for, including your subfloor.

3. Water and steam-proof the enclosure. Use an approved vapor barrier beneath your tiles. Natural stone, ceramic tile, or fiberglass are all options for the interior of a steam shower. Your walls and floor must be completely waterproof to prevent growth of dangerous mold.

4. Install a steam shower door. There are doors manufactured specifically for steam showers that effectively seal steam and water inside and prevent it from escaping to ruin drywall or wallpaper.

5. Build or install a seat or bench. You want somewhere to relax when you enjoy your home steam shower.

6. Install the steam generator. Your steam generator can be placed in a closet, cabinet or self-contained enclosure. It must be connected to the water line leading into the shower and to a 240V line. It should be sized to fit the room. Refer to the specs on the generator you choose for instruction on how far to place the generator from the steam enclosure.
