2000 Neon Car Stereo Installation

The 2000 Dodge/Plymouth Neon comes with an AM/FM car stereo with single-disc CD player. Neon owners who need to replace a broken head unit or upgrade to a more capable stereo can have the job performed by a professional technician. If you wish to save time and money, you can obtain the harness and faceplate adapters from an aftermarket stereo outlet and install the new stereo yourself.

Lift the Neon's hood and disconnect the grounding cable from the negative battery lead. Loosen the cable's clamp with the wrench and remove the cable. Set the cable aside until the new stereo is installed.

    • 2

Grab the top two corners of the trim panel that surrounds the stereo assembly and climate controls. Pull the panel from the dashboard until the clips on the back side of the panel detach from the dashboard. Pull the bottom clips from the dashboard and set the panel aside.

Remove the four screws around the perimeter of the stereo bracket with the Phillips-head screwdriver. Slide the factory unit from the stereo dock. Disconnect the stereo wiring connectors from the back of the stock stereo deck and unplug the antenna cable from the rear panel of the unit.

Slide the Chrysler stereo installation sleeve into the vacant stereo dock. Grab the stereo wiring and antenna cable from the back of the mounting dock and pull them to the front of the dashboard. Plug the stereo wiring connectors into the corresponding leads of the wiring harness adapter. The adapter will be labeled to show where the appropriate connections are to be made.

Plug the wiring harness adapter leads into the outlets on the back side of the new stereo deck. Plug the antenna cable lead into the FM antenna input on the back of the new unit. Slide the stereo deck into the installation sleeve until it locks into place.

Align the bottom edge of the trim panel on the dashboard and press the top of the panel against the dashboard. Press firmly around the perimeter of the panel to snap it back onto the Neon's dashboard. Return to the battery.
