Instructions

    • 1

Remove the tailgate from the back of the truck. It is best to have two people for this job with one person on each side to balance the weight of the tailgate. Pull the handle to let down the tailgate. Detach the tailgate by lifting up on each side and pulling away from the truck. Set it on two sawhorses where it will be painted.

    • 2

Remove the handle and anything else on the tailgate that is not to be painted such as emblems, stickers and decals. Clean the tailgate using soap and water. Dry with paper towels, removing any excess debris, grease or dust before moving on to the painting.

    • 3

Mix half primer and half lacquer into a paint gun. Plug in the gun, turn on and press the lever to spray the tailgate the desired color. Spray the top and sides of the tailgate thoroughly with the mix and allow a full day for this to dry before moving on.

    • 4

Sand the entire tailgate with 320-grit sandpaper, carefully covering the entire surface. Air blow the tailgate after it has been sanded to get rid of any dust or debris that has been left over from the sanding.

    • 5

Shake the paint can before opening and stir it with a stirring stick once it has been opened. Fill the paint gun with automotive paint and spray the tailgate with paint in the same manner the primer/lacquer mix was sprayed on. Cover the entire tailgate including the sides and allow at least four hours to dry.

    • 6

Spray on a second coat in the exact same manner, filling the paint gun if necessary. Give the paint at least 24 hours to dry once the second coat has been completed.

    • 7

Buff the tailgate to get the proper shine. Plug in the buffer and buff in a circular motion. Be sure not to push too hard so the new paint does not burn. Turn off the buffer once completed.
