How to Fix a Warped CD

How to Fix a Warped CD thumbnail
Flattening a warped CD might restore normal playback.

If you accidentally leave a CD on your car's dashboard or in direct sunlight out of its protective jewel case, the disc might resemble a coffee saucer by the time you get back. Maybe the edge has started to curl, or perhaps there's a curve across the surface. Temperature extremes can warp a CD, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's good for nothing more than being a coaster. You may be able to fix the disc with weight applied over time.

Things You'll Need

  • Electric hair dryer
  • Two panes of glass
  • Large books or other heavy, flat objects

Instructions

    • 1

Warm the CD with an electric hairdryer for five minutes.

    • 2

Place the CD flat on a glass pane, then place a second pane of glass on top of the disc.

    • 3

Set about 10 lbs. of books or other heavy, flat objects gently on the top pane of glass, centered over the CD. Leave the weight in place for two days.

    • 4

Remove the CD from the glass plates and test playback.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider burning a copy of your warped CD as soon as possible if it can be restored to normal playback. The layers on the disc can separate after warping damage, making the CD unplayable. If the layers split, no amount of weight can repair the disc.
