How to Back Up Garmin Files

Back up GPS data onto your computer

Garmin manufacturers GPS devices that can be used in vehicles, on boats or while hiking. A Garmin GPS can be connected to a computer via a cable that fits into a serial port. When the GPS is connected to the computer, you are able to transfer information to back up the GPS. Such data as previous routes and waypoints should be backed up frequently in case the GPS malfunctions and data is lost.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you do not have a serial port, you can purchase a serial USB converter.

  • If your GPS has an SD card and your computer has an SD card reader, you can back up the data in the GPS by clicking on "User Data," then "Data Transfer" then "Card." The data will be saved to the SD card, which can be removed from the GPS and inserted into a computer for backup.
