How to Replace the Starter Motor on 2005 KIA Spectra

The starter on your 2005 Kia Spectra's 2.0-liter engine is accessed from the top of the engine compartment and sits on the front side of the engine. The 2.0-liter engine is mounted transversely in the engine compartment to accommodate the front wheel drive trans-axle in the Spectra. The starter can be bench tested after it is out of the car to determine if a new starter is needed or if there is some other component causing starting issues in your car.

Locate the starter on the front of the engine. Look straight down between the engine and radiator. It is mounted near the driver's side of the engine.

    • 3

Disconnect the two wiring harness connections from the rear of the starter solenoid by removing the retaining nuts with a socket and ratchet and then slide the wires off the terminals. Mark the "B" terminal wire with a piece of tape so you know which one it is during reinstallation.

Remove the two mounting bolts from the nose of the starter and slide the starter out of the bell housing. Lift the starter out of the engine compartment and set it aside.

Position the new starter on the bell housing and install the two mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts with a socket and ratchet and then locate the wire you marked as the "B" wire. Install the wire on the "B" terminal then install the second starter wire on the "S" terminal on the back of the solenoid. Install the retaining nuts on the terminals and tighten them with a socket and ratchet.
