Instructions

    • 1

Collect information for the family tree. Before beginning the search, retrieve information with names, locales, dates of birth and more. The more information collected from the get-go, the easier the search.

    • 2

Install free software for the family search. Websites offer software to use when searching for family history. The software helps to organize information and makes it easier to keep track of it all.

    • 3

Begin the search. Ancestory.com helps individuals perform a thorough search through years of their family history while FamilySearch.org gives the requested genealogy without as much information. Typically, the last and first name comes first. If necessary, use the option to add more information for optimal results in the search.

    • 4

Take a trip to the library. Libraries have a ton of information such as records and past newspaper editions that may be found preserved on microfilm. The Internet provides plenty of resources for the county, state and other history through online libraries.

    • 5

Take a trip. Follow the path that leads to the family genealogy, and visit the city or town where the history began or left off. When the information is gathered, stick to the trail to find the pieces of history for the family lineage.

Tips & Warnings

  • Finding the family history requires patience and time when searching to fit the pieces to a large puzzle. Don't quit or become discouraged.
