How to Draw a Cleaning Lady

Comedic actress Carol Burnett once made the lethargic cleaning lady one of the beloved characters in her live and TV performances. While there's nothing funny about someone doing their job, creating your own cleaning lady caricature for some lighthearted fun on paper certainly can be fun. Like all things in the world, creating a cartoon representation of a cleaning lady means paying attention to basic shapes while exaggerating others. You're limited only by your own imagination when drawing the lady. For brevity's sake this article will cover some basics that you can change as you wish.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw an egg-shaped oval in the center of your paper. This shape serves as the cleaning lady's torso, so size it however you want your final art to be. Draw another small, similarly shaped oval at the top of the torso, allowing about one quarter of the small oval to overlap into the torso.

    • 2

Erase the overlapping line. You have the basis for the lady's head and torso. Add two elongated half circles on both the left and right sides of the torso to give the impression of her arms next to her sides. Draw a square on the bottom of the torso, allowing the two shapes to overlap. Erase the resulting overlapping line.

    • 3

Add another smaller square underneath the one you just drew, then draw a vertical line separating the square in half, giving the impression of two scrawny legs standing together. Add two side-by-side ovals underneath the leg square to make the lady's legs.

    • 4

Add detail to your drawing to flesh out your cleaning lady. Draw in a smallish oval in the face to make her nose, then add two smallish circles to be her eyes (don't forget to draw in the pupils). Draw in whatever facial expression you wish, then add an oval over the mouth line to give the impression of a rather large lipstick application.

    • 5

Draw in the rest of the details, like finishing her apron (don't forget the name tag) and adding either her hairstyle or a head covering, as is popular with the Carol Burnett character. Draw a simple-looking mop pail with a mop in it to either side of the lady.

Tips & Warnings

  • Trace your drawing in black ink to allow your art to stand out on the page.
