How to Install a Garage Door Insulation Blanket Kit

Insulate garage doors during winter.

Garage door insulation blankets are designed to cover garage doors during the winter months and don't interfere with the door operation. Since some garage doors are not energy efficient and allow air to flow through them, the air temperature of a garage can sometimes be the same as the outdoor temperature. An insulation blanket provides a protective barrier that stops the cold air from entering the garage. Many garage door insulation blankets come in kits that make them quick to install.

Things You'll Need

• Tape measure
• Marker
• Utility knife
• Double-sided tape

Instructions

1. Place a tape measure at one side of the garage door and measure across to the other side to determine the width.

2. Place the end of the tape measure at the top of the garage door and measure down to the floor to determine the length.

3. Unroll the insulation blanket material from the kit so that it is flat on the floor with the paper side facing downward.

4. Transfer the measurements of the garage door onto the insulation blanket using a marker.

5. Cut along the marker line using a utility knife until you have the proper size insulation blanket for your garage door. Discard the excess insulation material.

6. Pick up the insulation blanket and hold it against the garage door. Tuck 1 inch of the top of the blanket into the upper edge of the garage door mount all the way across.

7. Move to the left side of the insulation blanket and tuck it into the mount along the side of the garage door. Repeat the process to secure the right side of the insulation blanket.

Tips & Warnings

• If your garage door does not have a metal mount to wrap the insulation blanket into, purchase industrial-strength double-sided tape and cut it in strips to fit along the four edges of the garage door. Place the tape onto the door and then press the insulation blanket onto the tape to secure it.
