How to Crochet a Beanie Skull Cap
A beanie, also sometimes called a skull cap or a toque, is a small hat that fits tightly over the head and tops of the wearer's ears. If you understand basic crocheting techniques and are able to crochet in the round, you can crochet a beanie skull cap in a few hours. Use close stitches for ultimate warmth and fabric texture; you can even use the same pattern to make multiple beanies in different styles just by changing the yarn colors or weights that you use in the project.

1
Make three chain stitches and join them with a slip stitch to form a circle. Chain one and make ten single crochet stitches inside the circle. Place a stitch marker in the last stitch you make.
-
2
Make two single crochet stitches in every stitch around, including the stitch with the marker. Move the marker up to the last stitch of this round.

Increase the width of your hat. To do this for round three, make one single crochet in the first stitch followed by two single crochets in the next stitch; repeat this all the way around and move the marker after your last stitch. For round four, make one single crochet in each of the first two stitches followed by two single crochets in the next stitch. Repeat this pattern around, moving the stitch marker up to the last stitch worked. For each subsequent round, make one more individual single crochet in your pattern before making two stitches in one. Continue to move the stitch marker up after every round. Stop increasing when the circumference of the hat is 1.5 to 2 inches smaller than the circumference of your head.

Single crochet evenly in every stitch around for the next several rounds. To do this, make one single crochet in every stitch until you come to the marker; remove the marker, single crochet in the marked stitch and then put the marker in the stitch you have just made. Continue to single crochet this way until the hat is as tall as you want it to be.

Make a slip stitch in the final stitch to finish the hat and then cut the working yarn, leaving a four-inch tail. Use a large eye blunt needle to weave the ends of the yarn in and out of the stitches on the underside of the hat.

Tips & Warnings
For a contrasting look, switch to a second color of yarn five rounds before the end of the hat; single crochet two rounds in the new color, two rounds in the original color, and one final round in the new color.
