How to Convert a Graphics File to a Text File

Graphics files are also known as image files. Although they aren't meant to be text files, you can still convert them into a text document if needed. Some services that allow you to send files to others won't let you send a plain image. Sending an online fax from your computer is a perfect example of this. Most online fax services don't allow you to send an image, but they will allow you to send a text file.

Instructions

  1. Convert your Image to Bitmap

      Launch MS Paint by clicking on "Start > All Programs > Accessories" and clicking on MS Paint once to open it.

      Wait for the program to open. When it does, click on "File > Open." Use the window that appears to find your image and double-click on it. MS Paint will open your image.

      Click on "File > Save as." Assign your new image a name and choose where you want to save it. Click on the drop-down menu next to the words "Save as type" and select 24 Color Bitmap." Click "Save." This will create a copy of your image in the Bitmap format.

    Convering the Image to Text

      Close out of MS Paint and access Wordpad by clicking on "Start > All Programs > Accessories" and clicking on "Wordpad" once.

      Wait for the program to open. When it does, minimize it and find your bitmap image. Click and hold onto your image with the mouse button. Drag it down to the task bar where Wordpad is minimized and keep holding it. When it hits the minimized Wordpad, Wordpad will reopen. At that point, let go of the image, and it will appear inside of Wordpad.

      Click on "File > Save as." Assign your text file a name and choose where you want to save it. Click on the drop-down menu next to the words "Save as type." On the menu select "Text file." Click on "Save," and Wordpad will convert your image into a text file.
