How to Use Marker Pens

How to Use Marker Pens thumbnail
Marker pens range from permanent to non-toxic washable.

Artists and crafters like using paint markers to color different types of surfaces, and many people prefer markers to brushes. Marker pens come in a variety of sizes, from short pens appropriate for kids to long and slender tools for adults; regardless of size, marker pens are ideal for embellishing scrapbooks and making crafts. Professional artists and amateur crafters can use these special markers to draw and paint pictures and designs.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the right marker pens for the job you are doing. Use water-based marker pens if using the pens for paper, wood or metal projects. When the marker dries, it will have a slightly faded, matte look.

    • 2

Use an oil-based marker pen on anything including glass, plastic or ceramics. The oil-based marker pen is the most durable, permanent pen. Oil-based pens will not fade if exposed to water and sunlight.

    • 3

Make wide lines by choosing a pen with a chiseled, angled tip. Tilt the pen slightly while pressing the tip against the paper. Slide the pen down to make the design you want.

    • 4

Make thin lines by selecting a pen that has a small, pointed tip. Felt-tip pens are good for drawing tiny details.

    • 5

Color in large empty sections using markers that have a rounded, wide tip. Lean the tip against the object you are coloring. Sweep the marker tip back and forth to color in the area.

Tips & Warnings

  • Children should use pens with non-toxic ink. Ink from washable pens fades quickly.
