How to Cure Scarring

How to Cure Scarring thumbnail
Cure your scarring for flawless skin.

If you have a scar that bothers you, look into scar removal options. Getting rid of a scar can help you feel better about your appearance, which will allow you to relate to others more comfortably and be more confident in public.

Some scars can be removed simply and with minimal pain, but larger scars--especially those from surgery or the worst cases of cystic acne--will require a doctor's help and maybe even surgery. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Treat any wounds you get immediately. Keep them clean and apply a scar-inhibiting cream, available at any pharmacy, twice daily. Rub the cream into the wound gently to stop a scar before it starts. If you don't keep your wound moist and pliable, you're more likely to develop a scar. Creams are available that reduce the appearance and occurrence of scarring, but they are effective only before a scar has actually developed.

Use a silicone sheet or gel to make the scar less prominent. According to Oregon Health and Science University, silicone in gel form or as a thin, rubbery sheet can be applied to the scar to flatten its raised sections.

    • 3

Schedule an appointment with a licensed spa or plastic surgeon to undergo microdermabrasion. This process removes the top layer of skin, according to the University of Southern California's Health Magazine. Removing the top layer of skin lets new, healthier skin appear and can even promote the growth of new skin. This can soften scars or, if they're small, eliminate them entirely.

If you have large scars over a wide area of your body, see a plastic surgeon about surgical options. Surgeons can perform peels, injections or skin grafts to erase a scar.

    • 5

Try a combination of steroid injections, laser therapy and pressure therapy. Each can treat scarring on its own, but a combination is most effective. Steroid injections can also help lessen any pain or itching in the scar.
